Case Study

Barbara, Credit Analyst
for Large P.L.C.'s and Institutions

What is your day to day job?

The sector within which I work deals with Large European Companies and Institutions, and is split into different parts, each part specialising in firms from varying industrial sectors. My division is a little more general, as it deals with firms in the mechanical and electro-mechanical industry and the construction, transport, and telecommunications industries. I myself deal mainly with telecommunication firms and, to a lesser extent, hi-tech companies, working on maintaining relations between large European companies, and their affiliated companies around the globe, and BNP Paribas.

More specifically, my work consists of regularly monitoring my client's dossiers, setting up and renewing loans and compiling a credit analysis, which will be presented to the Credit Committee when decisions have to be taken on a higher level. I must be able to understand the concept of risk to the bank, as regards each of the companies which I monitor, through various contractual agreements, giving my opinion as to whether or not a loan should be issued, having analysed the client's dossier. A number of factors have to be taken onto account: the company itself, the market within which it operates, its potential for development, the intrinsic risk involved, its financial state, its relations between them and the bank.

For the majority of these firms, BNP Paribas is a veritable benchmark banking group. Relations with our clients therefore go beyond the purely financial. We often find that we have to intervene in various matters, such as share bidding, cash pooling, and employee savings and pension schemes. Aside from the technical functions involved in risk analysis, I must assume a global approach to the business relationship between BNP Paribas and the client, and try to develop it as much as I can.

What are the main attractions of your job?

Credit Analyst for Large Firms and Institutions is a position in which one is afforded a real autonomy in day to day management; it is therefore a position of responsibility. One is in permanent contact with colleagues in the BNP Paribas network around the world and this diversity helps one to understand the size and influence of the bank.

This job requires a wide range of skills and gives one an overview of the various careers within the bank. Consequentially, this also provides an excellent background for progressing into a different position within the bank, enabling me to make use of the great number of opportunities within BNP Paribas.

What is your academic background and what personal qualities are required for this job?

The ability to react quickly and to have a sound understanding of financial management is integral to a career as a Credit Analyst. Furthermore, one has to be able to cope with a great degree of autonomy, knowing how and where to look for information. One has to demonstrate the ability to co-ordinate and analyse relevant information.

What is your academic background and in what direction do you see your career headed?

I graduated from University with a Masters in Applied Quantitative Methods. As for my next position, the possibilities are seemingly limitless though I would like to stay in Investment and Corporate Banking or, if not, head towards Auditing and General Inspection.
