The bank of a changing world

Jerome, Business Advisor

What is your day to day job?

My work is extremely varied - I am in charge of a portfolio of small and medium sized businesses. I am almost a partner in these businesses, meeting regularly with their directors. I offer them differing types of credit scheme, but this is not my only role: I advise the client on numerous matters, such as international commerce, saving and pension plans, and other major operations.

The advantage of working for a bank such as BNP Paribas is that I can offer my clients an extremely wide and comprehensive range of products and they can benefit from our extended international and domestic networks. First and foremost, my job is dedicated to developing and nurturing good customer relations. I offer service and solutions, which will help my clients, achieve their goals and meet their needs, helping them to develop their businesses.

This position also carries with it the dimension of risk analysis. Along with the Assistant Business Advisor and the Credit Analyst, firms are evaluated in terms of the risk they carry, and it is only after a comprehensive analysis and the presentation of the clients dossier to the management, that a decision is made as to whether credit should be given or not.

What are the main attractions of this position?

This position goes so much further than the traditionally perceived view of the banker and loan manager. I am a partner and advisor to the businesses who are within my portfolio. This position is one of high responsibility, I have to make decisions and stick to them. I am responsible for my managing my portfolio and responsible for its ultimate profitability. I have a real autonomy. One of the other main attractions of the position is the personal contact. I get to meet people of all types of personality, both clients and colleagues.

What qualities are required for this position and what is your intended career path?

A Business Advisor has to be business minded, yet with a profound comprehension of risk management: the number of dossiers which have to be managed means that one requires good organisational skills; the ability to react swiftly and appropriately is a pre-requisite. As for my intended career path, before taking up this position I worked for the bank in Budapest. This is therefore my second position. My next will hopefully be in General Inspection.
